NASA III MARS 2025 ESSENTIALS
This project was carried out as collaboration with NASA and Lund University. It was kicked off with a 2 week long field trip to Houston where we had the rare opportunity to get inside the NASA facilites.
A Mars Mission is by far the most extreme mission taken on by mankind. One of the biggest issues is a 22-minute delay (one way) to send and receive data from earth. Ground control can therefore not support them in an effficient way. This and other unique factors like the "world out of sight syndrome", zero gravity or simple being in a confined space for a duration so long that there is no available data of how this will affect humans - or as one of the current Astronauts described it: "being on a roadtrip with your wife for 3 years and you cant get out of the car" will challenge the mission's success. All these stressors will add up and in an environment so unsustainable, every small incident could endanger the mission and life of the six astronauts.
MARS 2025 ESSENTIALS is gear developed in cooperation with NASA that makes astronauts work life more efficient and private life more comfortable. This concept aims to support the crews' strenuous 3 year trip to Mars. It consists of the MARS2025 APPAREL and the MARS2025 COMMUNICATOR. The first is an in-flight apparel allowing for a longer wear time, better hygiene, washability and function. The second is a communication device which provides the astronauts with all the information needed, but also includes a privacy module to allow for moments on his own without withdrawing from the crew.
